With the Jewish State recently discovering its world spying operation, what changes should America take now?

There have been multiple reports over the years, and recently, concerning allegations.d
Israeli
global spying operations, primarily involving advanced commercial spyware such as Pegasus
. However, the U.S. government considers Israel a strong ally and has generally opted to handle these issues through diplomatic and counterintelligence channels rather than significant public punitive actions.
In response to general concerns about commercial spyware, including that produced by Israeli firm NSO Group, the U.S. has taken several actions, which could be considered the "changes" the U.S. has pursued:
  • Executive Order: President Biden signed an executive order in April 2023 that prohibits federal departments and agencies from using commercial spyware that might be abused by foreign governments, target Americans overseas, or pose security risks to U.S. networks. This reflects a more robust federal policy regarding the use of such tools.
  • Export Controls and Entity List Designations: The U.S. government has considered placing restrictions on the sale of surveillance products. The Commerce Department added NSO Group to its Entity List in November 2021, restricting U.S. companies from doing business with the firm without a special license.
  • Data Security and Privacy Measures: There has been an increased focus on the vulnerabilities that enable sophisticated spying, such as the iMessage exploits used by Pegasus. This has led tech companies like Apple to issue urgent software patches and enhanced warnings to potential targets of state-sponsored attacks.
  • Legal Action: In some cases, legal action has been pursued, with a U.S. court recently ordering NSO Group to cease using its spyware on WhatsApp following a lawsuit by Meta Platforms.
  • Internal Awareness: U.S. counterintelligence officials consistently rank Israeli espionage as among the most active on American soil, alongside other major powers, leading to ongoing internal vigilance and counterintelligence efforts.
These measures represent a combination of policy shifts, regulatory actions, and a continued emphasis on counterintelligence to manage the risks associated with espionage from both allies and adversaries.
